When you search for information on the Web, it’s important to use specific techniques that will get you more relevant and focused results. Although every database and search engine is different, there are a number of common strategies that can help you refine your searches to save time and effort.

Typically, a search query consists of a few keywords that identify what kind of information you’re looking for. The search engine then looks for information on the Web that matches those keywords. Once it has a list of Web pages, it presents them to you in a search results page (SERP). Each individual web page requires significant processing to match keywords and find related information.

To improve their performance, most search engines have algorithms that analyze and rank pages based on how well they match your search terms. These algorithms can be extremely complex, weighing hundreds of variables. As a result, a website may need to make many changes to its content and links to ensure it ranks highly in a search engine’s results. Although many webmasters focus on optimizing their websites to Google standards, there is a growing movement toward embracing the advantages of alternative search engines.

One example is Baidu, the most popular search engine in China. Its interface looks similar to Google’s and offers features that can make your site more attractive to Chinese searchers. However, its results appear to be less comprehensive and it censors some images and blocks pro-democracy websites.

In addition to matching keywords in search queries with those in the content of indexed web pages, many search engines also consider the relevance and quality of the page’s author and its other inbound links. The more reputable and authoritative the site, the higher it will rank in a search engine’s results.

You can further refine your search results by using boolean operators AND, OR and NOT. You can also truncate search words by leaving out parts of them, which is known as truncating. The most common symbol for truncation is an asterisk, *, but each database uses its own syntax to denote truncation. You can use parentheses around search phrases to specify what is to be searched, for example, “social media” OR “impact of social media on adolescents.” Search engines will first perform a search for each phrase, then combine the results.
